Project 1
In this project, we are tasked to study one recipe from the Youtube channel
Pasta Grannies and breakdown the process into an intractable infographic poster. The
poster should transmit a set of instructions and educate the audience at the
same time.
Some of the requirements in this poster includes:
- Graphs, charts, diagrams
- Animation principles
- Information type
- Devices
- Principles (LATCH, etc)
- Aesthetics; isometric, simplified,
The video that I have chosen for this project is "Easy Ricotta ravioli with tomato sauce!".
Recipe listed in the description are as follows:
For the sugo:
1 large garlic clove, extra virgin olive oil, 1kg pork ribs , 400ml passata, 400ml pummarola tomato sauce (which has been bottled with garlic and herbs), salt, 2 small celery sticks with leaves
parsley stalks (kept from chopping the leaves see below)
The sugo needs to simmer for an hour.
For the ravioli filling: 3 eggs, 1 tablespoon chopped parsley leaves 400g drained cows milk ricotta, 30g grated pecorino cheese
For the dough: 500g of soft wheat flour, 4 eggs, water if necessary (it will depend on the size of your eggs)
In a more simplified way, the steps from the video itself can be broken down into the sauce, the ravioli filling, and the dough. For inspiration, I looked at several food infographic in Pinterest. I also took screenshots of the making process from the video as a visual guide.
I started sketching a few thumbnails in Photoshop, primarily using the 1240x1750 pixel ratio as I believe the longer poster can fit more information.

From the three that i have made, I chose the 2nd one as I believe the visual and presentation of information is more interesting. I then redrew the sketch in more detail with the text instructions to see if the overall layout design works.

As I moved to creating the illustrations, I looked at several references in Pinterest and I decided to go for this stylized geometric vector illustrations.

Progressing into the design, I took the detailed sketch that I had finished and started laying down all of the base visuals and colors. Making sure the color choices are bright and vibrant.

Moving on, I also placed all of the text information of the poster; the title, ingredients list, and steps. The main fonts that I used are Filmotype Potomac, CornDog, and RL Horizon. Most of these text invoke a fun and playful retro feeling to it, which is exactly the idea that I wanted to focus on.

Visuals of the instructions are also drawn, keeping it as simple as possible to make it easy to read and recognize especially due to the small size.

The main visual attention lies in the illustration of the served ravioli. To make it eye catching, I specifically added an extra layer of depth using colors, shading, and small detail of the grated pecorino cheese.

Lastly, small details like drop shadow on the visual instructions, text styles, and small adjustment in layout help to fully bring the infographic poster together.

In week 6, a few additional feedback was given by the Mr. Kannan:
- Layout is slightly awkward, flow of steps is not intuitive
- Font shouldn't be too bold and black colored
- Don't miss visuals on some steps (First step of making the sago)
- Make background and visual instruction more contrast
There are other small changes made and they can be seen in this final design below.
